Buying a used car in the UK: MOT history and viewing checklist

Compare official MOT mileage and vehicle records, then check what a free lookup cannot show.

1. Use official records

Check MOT history and status on GOV.UK and compare dated mileage, recurring advisories and failures. GetCarCode currently cannot retrieve UK MOT history by registration.

Check vehicle details and tax status with the official DVLA enquiry service. Match the VIN and registration to the V5C; a V5C identifies the registered keeper, not proof of legal ownership.

2. Fill the gaps

Ask for service invoices. Free MOT and DVLA records are not a complete finance, theft, insurance write-off or accident check. Consider a reputable paid history check and read its coverage.

A clean MOT history does not rule out accident repairs or hidden engine and gearbox faults.

3. Before paying

Request a cold start, check dashboard warnings and arrange an independent inspection. Test drive only with suitable insurance and permission.

Record the vehicle identity and agreed terms on the receipt. Arrange insurance and tax before driving: the seller’s vehicle tax does not transfer to the buyer.

Frequently asked questions

Can I see the seller’s finance on a free MOT check?

No. MOT history does not report outstanding finance. Use a service that explicitly includes it and verify any settlement.

Are Northern Ireland rules the same?

Not always. Check the official Northern Ireland guidance for MOT arrangements and coverage.
